'Bubble of Comfort'
I read the words 'bubble of comfort' in one of the books i recently read concerning the history of the Inuit peoples. At the time the words seemed significant ... I can't remember the exact context the words were used in ... I think something to the effect ... we observe and judge everything and everyone from the inside of our 'bubble of comfort' .... seems we are not willing to leave our 'bubble of comfort' and enter into the 'pain' of our neighbours. Many of us know what happens when our individual 'bubble of comfort' bursts! What will it be like if the 'bubble of comfort' most of mankind lives in today bursts?
This morning these three words revisited my mind during my morning meditations.
Seems to me, for the most part modern man ... man during the past 5,000 years or so ... has lived in a 'bubble of comfort'.
My early experiences here in Iqaluit seem to reinforce this view ... the Inuit are an exception to the above statement ... and while the traditions of the Inuit are quickly fading, there are still remnants of this reality for anyone wishing to learn.
This mornings experience at work seemed to reinforce my reflections ... I learned of yet another suicide ... a young man in Pang ...
What has 'man' done while in this 'bubble of comfort' ... what have we done with all the collective learning, knowledge, wisdom etc??
The earth has endured more contamination and damage in the past couple of centuries by the hand of 'modern man' than she has collectively in the previous countless milleniums ...
What a testimony???
Seems we have an ever growing repository of knowledge and an ever shrinking repository of 'wisdom' ... for some strange reason mankind seems to prefer 'knowledge' over 'wisdom'.
This huge pool of knowledge is manifest in modern day technology ... communications, travel, exploration etc etc
The shrinking pool of 'wisdom' is manifest in our ever increasing supply of weapons of mass destruction ... ever increasing contamination of our planet ... the atmosphere ... our food chain etc etc
